Aleppo guide: an unmatched kitchen and souks coming back to life

Syrians like to say you don’t really know Syrian food until you’ve eaten in Aleppo. It is the city of the citadel, covered souks and khans, and one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world.

At Syria Finds we document the Aleppo places we visit ourselves: kibbeh and grill restaurants, sweet shops and pistachio sellers, and souks and khans, many of them coming back to life after restoration.

What is Aleppo known for?

  • Ancient City of Aleppo

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986, with historic lanes, houses and mosques.

  • Citadel of Aleppo

A massive fortress on a hill at the centre of the city and one of the best-known castles in the Middle East.

  • The covered souks

One of the longest covered market networks in the world; restored sections are reopening.

  • The khans

Such as Khan al-Wazir and Khan al-Sabun — reminders of Aleppo’s place on the great trade routes.

  • Aleppo laurel soap

Made with olive and laurel oil — one of the best-known things visitors take home.

What to eat in Aleppo

Aleppine cooking is among the richest in the region: dozens of kinds of kibbeh, kebab with sour cherries, muhammara made with Aleppo pepper, and Aleppo pistachios in the sweets. The city’s grill and mezze traditions are worth the trip on their own.
